A serious lack of activity on my behalf due to a monumentally depressing four weeks.

I’ve suffered a sudden death to a family member which has left us all shocked and sad and me personally annoyed as there was no way I could get home to attend the funeral or be there for people. On top of that a friend I haven’t heard from for a year passed on which I only discovered after recieving a letter from his daughter.

My triumphant return to the working classes as been less than brilliant. The nine person technical team I previously worked in was sold wholesale to one of Europes biggest IT consultancy firms. My old role was as a “Graphics and Multimedia Developer” so I was a little suprised to discover that this new firm has decided that 15 years of design and development experience should be spent printing TPS Reports from the support database. Zero challenge, zero interest and zero use of my experience of skills means my morale has taken a serious nosedive.

Finally, in an effort to get my career back on track I applied for a position at a Swedish game company as a 3D modeller. I admit my portfolio wasn’t great but they were interested and called me in for an interview. It was really positive and they even talked about creating a new role in the company just for me as a tool developer. This would mean creating all the editors and content creation tools needed for their engine.

Everything seemed great, I had great references from some well known industry guys (even had someone at Valve vouch for me) and sent in the source-code to some of the projects from my site. Then it went cold. I was told that the role was “premature” and that they weren’t ready for such a person yet. Thank you and goodnight.

So all in all this past four weeks has been a total bummer. I’ve been a bit apathetic and taking some time to regroup and figure out my next move so not much has been going on with my projects. I haven’t forgotten them, but as you can imagine I need a bit of “me time” to get my head straight.
