Day of Defeat player character models

Below is a selection of player models I’ve made for Day of Defeat over the past couple of years. They’ve gone from fairly basic “hackjobs” to complete from the ground up creations. These are for the original pre-Source version of DoD and work with version 1.3. All use the 9-way blending system.

License of use

These models are for use ONLY in the Half-Life modification/retail game “Day of Defeat”. These models may NOT be ported or converted to any other game or Half-Life based game/mod.

You may use elements of my work in you own Day of Defeat models ONLY with my express permission and providing you give me full credit for the elements taken. If you have ideas/requests for changes to these models please tell me – I will endevour to help you out.

British & Canadian Airborne Infantry v2.0

These are an update to the original Britsh & Canadian Airborne models I made about a year ago. I’ve increased the detail in the faces, added proper hands and re-worked a lot of the textures.

The models replace the default DoD 1.3 player models with British or Canadian Airborne infantry soldiers. There are currently six combinations allowing you to choose whether you want British or Canadian models, with helmets or with berets. Each combination is in a seperate ZIP file. You can download the combinations from the links below.

Airborne SniperAirborne Bren GunnerAirborne Sergeant with StenAirborne Soldier with Enfield

The models include:

  • Correct badges and insignia for each nation
  • Different ranks for each class
  • Choice of berets or helmets
  • Replacement Mk5 Sten SMG p_model, models are animated to hold it correctly
  • Replacement Sten and Bren gun sounds
  • Fixed version of the default DoD Enfield to remove the jumping amimation bug

The British Airborne version includes a black Bren gunner for racial diversity. British forces weren’t segragated during WWII and I have read references of black men training to be airborne soldiers. Sadly I’ve never seen an authentic picture of a black airborne soldier in combat but it didn’t seem wrong to include one in the models.

Additional Weapon Models

My friend and modelling associate, “Marzy”, has put together a set of weapon models to compliment the airborne pack. These replace the first person perspective (v_models) in Day of Defeat and features improved models and skins plus Dennison Smock sleeves for the British class. They also include new sounds.

Downloads for each model can be found below.

* these versions of the Sten aren’t held quite correctly by third person player models when using my player model pack.

Canadian Loyal Edmonton Regiment

These are the original DoD Brit player model combined with my low-poly/moving mouth heads, designed to represent the Canadian Loyal Edmonton Regiment around the time of the Battle for Ortona.

I’ve added a transparent scrim to the helmet with a field dressing tucked under at the back and also a rolled gas cape to the webbing set. I’ve tweaked the colours and made the webbing “sand” as per Canadian regulations rather than the British green. Arm patches are as per the unit 1943.

Zip includes models for 1.3 and 1.0 (if anyone is still using retail+sturmbot) and a period Canadian flag model.

US Paratrooper with improved heads and hands

It struck me the other day when looking at the faces on the default US Airborne models how low poly and bad they look compared to the others. Anyway, bored as I was I decided to improve on them a bit.

The model is the standard DoD 1.3 US Paratrooper model I’ve just replaced the head and hand models. In the default models, all of the players had mohawk hair cuts, however in this version only 3 of them do and I’ve added their “warpaint”*. The models also have moving mouths with react to in game voice commands and voice comms – as you talk your player model talks.

*A couple hundred men (at most) from the 101st Airborne parachute engineers and some members of demolition teams shaved their heads completely or partly and donned warpaint taken from the freshly painted invasion stripes on their aircraft.

US Paratrooper with jumpgear

Nothing particularly remarkable but I put it together after several requests from players on the Day of Defeat forums.

The model is the standard DoD 1.3 US Paratrooper model with the jumpkit from DoD beta 3.1 added. The request was to have a paratrooper model that looked more like he had “just landed” so I simply removed the main and reserve parachutes and put the normally waist slung rucksack on his back.

UPDATE – The models have now been updated for DoD 1.3’s new 9 way blending animations and I’ve added the faces and hands from my 101st Airborne Models.
